Santa
Barbara Archeologist prepared the map for a study, Cultural Affiliation and Lineal Descent of Chumash Peoples (edited by Sally
McLendon and Santa Barbara Archeologist), undertaken for the National Park Service
and finalized in 1999. Richard Applegate contributed linguistic information to that project when it was first underway.
The native towns that are shown on the map are based on those rancherías named in mission records.
The linguistic forms of the names as they appear on the map, adapted for English speakers, derived from Richard Applegate's
previous work on Chumash placenames, as well as consultation with Kathryn Klar for Northern Chumash forms. Sally McLendon
and Ken Whistler also provided input. Our full report can be accessed at: http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/chis/chumash.pdf.
